Robert Edington. While a State Representative he wrote the bill that established the University of South Alabama, Mobile Historic Development Commission and Battleship Park. He has served on over 20 boards. He served as an attorney for more than 60 years. He was responsible for the ships coming during every Mardi Gras. He has been Mobilian of the Year and Veteran of the Year.

  2. Ernest L. berger on May 5, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Henry deTonti……Old Mobile’s ambassador to native tribes, Circa 1703-1705. “Bra de Fer” (Iron Hand) was LaSalle’s chief officer before joining the Bienville brothers in tne founding of Mobile. The trading agreements he negotiated literally insured the early survival of the colony. He died of yellow fever in 1705.
I have reenacted deTonti at Mobile historic events for 15 years.

  6. David Lindon Harris on May 17, 2019 at 9:01 pm

    Great job !
There are a lot of Buildings here in Mobile Alabama that needs be spruced up . Older Buildings that needs to be put back in to use . Homeless work training shelters would catch 2 fish with a single hook . That in itself is a multiple bonus for everyone that lives in the Mobile County area . Even the least able people can become a benefit to themselves again , and to our entire family community as a whole .
City revenues would be increased dramatically in short order , and in the long term we all would gain a much preferred good name .
Please consider this , every time you get together ? A strong foundation starts with compassion , and builds by faithfulness .

Thank you for your time and consideration and efforts .

  13. Jerry Powell on April 21, 2020 at 10:23 pm

Alright! Full disclosure! I’m admittedly somewhat biased as Eric and I have been friends since high school! He had many more friends than I because he spent so many years there! On top of being a dear friend and a kind soul, he is obviously a multi talent! He has certainly helped make any project I have included him in a huge success! He is well-deserving of this award!

  14. Ralph Hough on April 22, 2020 at 12:26 am

Those sound bites have a great feel…! Congrats, Eric!

  15. Byron Cruthirds on April 22, 2020 at 12:31 am

I’ve known Eric since High School. Not only does he play a assortment of musical instruments, he is a singer, and a Comedian! He’s played with the Plum Loco Band and many others around the Gulf Coast.
The Mobile Arts Council made a Excellent Choice!

  16. Gary Stiegler on April 22, 2020 at 3:07 pm

I am proud to have the opportunity to play drums in “Tony B and the Opperators” with Eric. He is a very talented musician and a great guy.
I have several of his CD’s done by Eric and his wife Karin. What a great talented couple. Keep up the good work Eric.

  17. Ken Matthews on April 22, 2020 at 5:52 pm

We let me glom on while you’re hot in the news. I listened to Eric at a restaurant years ago playing solo with guitar. I was knocked out at this

    Hi there,

My name is Selena Garza. I recently moved into a home in Mobile that had been occupied by the same family since it was built in the 70s. They left a piano in the house and inside of the piano chair I found an old recital program from May 2, 1953 at Bernheim Hall. If you guys are interested in preserving and archiving this piece of history I would be happy to pass it along. You can call or email me. Thank you.

  32. Joey Warner on December 9, 2021 at 6:19 pm

    Fairhope’s Corey Swindle
is ready to use his talent to recognize Mobile’s best athletes.

    By Joey Warner
    MOBILE BASEBALL
    CONNECTION

A life size statue of Hank Aaron is on display at the Mobile Arts Council Gallery next door to the Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile.

“Being the hometown guy, and having been involved in baseball my entire life, this project is especially near to my heart,”
Corey Swindle wrote in a message.

Corey Swindle of Fairhope, Alabama along with four more finalists have submitted their work and it is on display at the Arts Council Gallery.

    https://mobilearts.org/city-of-mobile-mobile-arts-council-seeking-proposals-for-hall-of-fame-courtyard/

One of the talented experts will be chosen as the artist to achieve and fulfill this amazing project.

Six nine-foot-tall bronze statues with pedestals, portraying Mobile’s five Hall of Fame baseball players and one Hall of Fame football player will be erected in the Hall of Fame Courtyard in Cooper Riverside Park next to the Convention Center at the foot of Government Street in
    downtown Mobile.

Former Major League baseball players Hank Aaron; Leroy “Satchel” Paige, Willie McCovey, Ozzie Smith, Billy Williams and former Houston Oiler and National Football League player Robert Brazile are the first players to be recognized with more members of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame to follow.

Swindle’s son, Brody, is a rising star on the baseball field for Coach Matt Limbaugh at Bayside Academy High School in Daphne, AL.

It is evident Corey has his heart and soul in to this opportunity.

As baseball and sports enthusiasts from Mobile and Baldwin Counties as well as the surrounding area, we should rally around and support Corey Swindle with hope he will be the lucky one chosen as the creator of these unique sculptures.

“My team feels we have a great shot at this project and would be honored to be apart of this awesome project,” Swindle wrote.

Check out Corey’s work in the images of Hank Aaron.

I wish I had the funding to put all of her miniatures into a single “Roxanne Dyess Miniatures Museum” . . . . she was one talented lady.

How does a young artist get the opportunity to sell her artwork in the square? Is there a booth fee?

  58. Ragan Windsor on February 1, 2023 at 11:01 am

What an amazing exhibit. Exceptional body of work, Louis Tooker captures the essence of the figure in an old world style reminiscent of Inges.
So inspired to work with the figure again. As I embark on my own studies of figurative drawing, I appreciate the effort it took to complete these drawings.
The paintings in this show are an expression of the vitality and diversity of the Art scene in the Mobile area. Jessica Maple did an exemplary job curating this exhibit.

Hello Jade! Thank you for reaching out. While we don’t have any control over booking events, we would recommend reaching out to the Mobile Convention Center. The Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center anchors lively downtown Mobile, Alabama, within walking distance of retail shops, restaurants, museums, parks and art galleries. The 317,000-square-foot facility features 16 meeting rooms, two ballrooms and two exhibit halls that total 100,000 square feet. They would be best equipped with the facilities necessary for your dancers and currently host several dance competitions throughout the year.

Eugene Walter, Eugene, is present in my mind through the wonderful memories I have of him in Rome, and the grand time I had visiting him in Mobile in November 1987.
Many of his books grace my library, some adorned with a witty annotation signed by him.
I haven’t forgotten the lyrics he wrote to one of my compositions, Secret Colors . The song was performed at the Eugene Walter celebration concert in 1987.
I am heartfelt that Eugene is still remembered, he would have lived that!
