Throwdown Artists Wanted!

Now in its 10th year, The Throwdown is the Mobile Arts Council’s (MAC’s) largest annual fundraiser. The Throwdown consists of a live art competition between some of Mobile’s finest local artists, an all-inclusive silent auction, live music, and more. Each year, five artists are chosen to be our official Throwdown competitors (one being the previous year’s champion). These artists are featured in our gallery during the month of the exhibition, promoted on our social media, and viewed creating artwork LIVE during the Throwdown event. This year’s event will take place on October 15, from 6 – 9 PM at the USS Alabama Battleship Aircraft pavilion. All proceeds will go towards MAC’s mission to enrich the quality of life in the Mobile area through increasing accessibility to the arts and promoting a vibrant cultural community.

This application is open to all Mobile Bay-area artists. Applicants must submit up to three works of art in any medium that reflect their work/style, as well as a photo of themselves. These images will be used in promoting the applicant, their artwork (on social media and in our virtual gallery), and the event if selected. If chosen, you will receive a free MAC Artist Membership. You may use your own tools/supplies in addition to what MAC provides. The artwork created for The Throwdown will then be sold through a live auction at the end of the evening, with all proceeds to go to MAC’s programming and services. The artist whose piece gets the highest bid will be given the title of 2021 Throwdown Champion. The Champion agrees to compete in defending their title in the 2022 competition. Artists will be chosen to reflect a diverse range of artistic mediums and styles. Online submissions will be open from now to August 27th. Those who enter will receive notification of acceptance by Friday, September 3rd. For further information, contact Lucy Gafford at director@mobilearts.org or 251-432-9796.
