Member’s Mini MAC Exhibition
Mobile Arts Council is proud to present Cherrelle Jefferson Smith in our Members’ Mini MAC Gallery this quarter. For this installation, Cherelle offers a body of work without a title—an intentional choice that removes any prescribed narrative and invites viewers to engage with the pieces on their own terms.
By leaving the work untitled, Cherrelle creates space for a more personal exchange between the art and its audience. Each viewer is encouraged to interpret the work through their own lens, forming connections that are authentic and unfiltered.
This collection captures the essence of sisterhood—extending far beyond bloodlines—through shared rituals, intimate moments, and collective memory. At the same time, it celebrates Black excellence and heritage, weaving these themes throughout the installation with care and intention.
Drawing from her background as a cosmetologist, Cherrelle incorporates materials and references from the salon into her visual language. The result is a striking fusion of fine art and lived experience, where tools and textures of the beauty industry become part of the storytelling.
More than an exhibition, this installation is a tribute to the spaces where connection happens: hair salons as places of conversation, bonding, tradition, and memory-making. These are environments where stories are shared, identities are shaped, and community is strengthened.
We thank Cherelle for creating such a thoughtful and powerful installation. This street facing gallery is available for the public to view twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, so be sure to visit the Members’ Mini MAC Gallery on Joachim Street in downtown Mobile to experience it for yourself.
