Sculpting Tradition: A Mardi Gras MoonPie Workshop
The Mobile Arts Council is proud to announce a unique professional development opportunity sponsored by Alabama Folklife Association for local art educators: Sculpting Tradition: A Mardi Gras MoonPie Workshop, taking place on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Led by master float builder Steve Mussell and a team of professional artists with over 100 years of combined expertise in float construction, prop making, and Mardi Gras artistry, this workshop will provide educators with hands-on training and valuable classroom resources.
Participants will:
- Receive a comprehensive float prop curriculum to integrate into their classrooms
- Learn specialized techniques directly from four expert instructors
- Create and take home a ready-to-paint MoonPie prop sculpture
- Enjoy a collaborative learning environment with lunch provided
Upon completion, educators will be recognized as Certified Float Prop Instructors, equipping them to inspire students with projects that connect directly to Mobile’s famous Mardi Gras traditions. This initiative will help develop a pipeline of young artists prepared to contribute to the city’s cultural and creative economy. Space is limited to 20 participants, ensuring an intimate and immersive training experience.
“This certification not only strengthens our arts education community but also preserves and promotes Mobile’s unique cultural heritage,” said Steve. “We are excited to equip educators with the tools they need to bring the magic of Mardi Gras into the classroom.”
Join Steve, his artist and Mobile Arts Council October 18, from 8:00am-1:00pm, at MAC’s Gallery @Room 1927, 6 S. Joachim Street, Mobile AL. Reserve your spot in class today here.
