October Artist Member of the Month
Congratulations to our October Artist Member of the Month, Ransom Phelps!
Hear about Ransom’s inspirations, accomplishments and more from the artist himself.
“I was born, raised and educated in Andalusia, AL, graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School in 1966 where Mr. C.C. Baker was the principal. My fascination with photography was the result of seeing Mr. Emmit “Pugg” Nix photographing different events for families in our neighborhood. He would look down in the little plastic box, and in a week or so, MAGIC!!! When I was growing up, I didn’t know a black person could be anything other than a teacher, or a preacher. Perhaps I can be of some encouragement to some younger person looking on.
After doing extensive reading at the library I took several courses at the University of South Alabama. Existing Light and Studio Lighting were among my favorite classes. I started using a camera where the film cartridge fit into the back of the camera. Next came my Polaroid SX70, then on to my first SLR film camera with the interchangeable lens. Now I use a DSLR, seeing what I’m doing as I go, allowing more creativity. I have been privileged to work with Bob Brazier on his, “Mahogany,” magazine in the late 70’s. Daphne’s, “Jubilee,” magazine when Maria Nicholson was head of the parks and recreation department. I worked as assistant photographer with Ken Holt for several years and about four other photographers occasionally. I had FUN! I enjoy photography and telling other people’s stories through photographs. Covering events is now another favorite fun thing to do. The challenge comes, in not taking pictures, but making pictures, and trying to do so with some artistic expression. I am now looking forward to working with, “Steppin Out News,” & “Diversity,” magazine and contributing to their success.”
Thank you, Ransom, for your incredible work and dedication to our community!
