Board Member Spotlight

We are proud to shine light on board member Charlie Kelly!

Meet Charlie, a passionate advocate for the arts and a dedicated member of the Arts Council of Mobile (MAC) Board. Born and raised between the vibrant cities of New Orleans and Mobile, Charlie’s artistic journey began early. He graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, where he majored in voice and theatre, and later earned a BFA in Theatre from Boston University.

Charlie’s career took him to New York City, where he spent 19 years honing his craft. One of his most notable achievements was performing in the long-running, Off-Broadway hit Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, in which he took part in over 500 performances. His time in the Big Apple deepened his love for the performing arts and sparked a desire for a more vibrant cultural community—a desire he would later bring back to Mobile.

In 2006, Charlie returned to Mobile, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a vision for a stronger, more dynamic arts scene. He has remained involved in the local arts community through various performances in community theatre, always seeking ways to contribute and grow the cultural landscape in the region.

“Since moving back down here, I’ve seen the need for a more vibrant arts community, the sort of thing I miss most about New York,” says Charlie. “I joined the Arts Council board to play a more active part of nurturing and developing the arts here in Mobile. Not just visual arts, but also the performing arts. I figure if I want to see a vital, more significant cultural scene here in Mobile, MAC is certainly a good place to help. I’m thrilled to be on the board at MAC!”

Through his work with MAC, he aims to help foster a flourishing arts scene that will inspire and engage future generations of artists and audiences alike.

We’re grateful to have Charlie’s expertise, enthusiasm, and energy on our board as we continue to build a more vibrant, inclusive arts community in Mobile.
