Join The Haunted Bookshop in welcoming celebrated author Carrie Dalby on September 8, 2024, 3-5pm, for an afternoon dedicated to her latest work, “Loyalty: Washington Square Secrets 3”. This captivating novel immerses readers into the early 20th century Mobile society, evolving around the fallout of a murder-suicide that ripples through Washington Square. Dalby’s novel relates the story of Jim Abbott, an officer assigned to monitor the surviving child of the tragic incident, Ernest Hart, whose emotional turbulence suggests deeper ties to the crime. In the midst of this psychological whirlwind is Francesca Wilton, the temporary guardian of Ernest. Struck by her own loss, Francesca, along with a gifted friend and an astute neighborhood medium, enter a battle against the supernatural, striving to save Ernest from his father’s haunting oppression.

Dalby will be in-conversation with Captain Billie Rowland of the Mobile Police Department. Rowland became a top source for Dalby in capturing law enforcement in Mobile, AL in the early 1900s. Join their chat as they delve into the creation and themes of her novel, exploring the complex characters and their emotional journeys as well as MPD history. ABOUT LOYALTY: WASHINGTON SQUARE SECRETS: In the autumn of 1920, a murder-suicide shakes the residents of Washington Square. Officer Jim Abbott doesn’t realize the return of his shellshock is only the beginning of his concerns. Jim is assigned to keep tabs on the surviving child, Ernest Hart, who appears to be haunted by the recently departed murderer. Neighbor Francesca Wilton grows closer to Ernest during her temporary guardianship of him, but his deteriorating emotional state reveals there is more to the seven-year-old than she expected. Then a loss of her own throws her life into further turmoil. As the haunting looms closer, Francesca involves a friend gifted with telepathic and astral powers, as well as a skilled medium from the neighborhood to rid Ernest from his father’s oppression. In their attempt to save Ernest, Jim becomes entangled in the women’s unconventional abilities on a level he never expected.

 

ABOUT CARRIE DALBY: Carrie Dalby, a Mobile resident since 1996, writes primarily in the Southern Gothic genre focusing on the 1890s-1920s including the Washington Square Secrets series, The Possession Chronicles, and The Malevolent Trilogy. FORTITUDE, a teen novel, is listed as a “Best History Book for Kids” by Grateful American Foundation. Carrie has published over a dozen books, numerous short stories in various anthologies, and several non-fiction articles in international magazines. Part of her volunteer work includes having served two terms as president of Mobile Writers Guild, five years as the Mobile Bay area Local Liaison for SCBWI, and helping coordinate the Mobile Literary Festival.
