MOJO’s 2023 Jazzalea Award is a perfect opportunity for jazz al fresco in the parking lot of Central Presbyterian Church (1260 Dauphin St.). It’s the spot where we held the 2021 ceremony, and we return there to present the Bob Spielmann Jazzalea Award to Dr. Joseph Mitchell on Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Joseph Mitchell has served his community through education, performance, and public sector work. He was a founding member of MOJO and served as its first education director. He took the idea of MOJO’s monthly Jazz Jambalaya series and molded it into a remarkably long-running cultural series. For 20 years now, MOJO’s monthly presentation has been creative, varied, and qualitative and Mitchell ushered it down that path. The result has been an impact on thousands of lives.

The choice for honoring Mitchell musically was obvious. Bassist Harry Anderson was Mitchell’s bandmate in Suite and went on to become an instructor in Southern University’s storied music department. Anderson has assembled a quintet of Southern University’s best to make the trip from Baton Rouge for the special occasion. This will be a top-notch jazz band you don’t want to miss. The shift in scenery means bringing lawn chairs and coolers. If food trucks will be available, we’ll let you know. If it does rain, the event will move inside the building.
