The Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra’s (MSYO) season finale will showcasethe Gulf Coast’s most talented student musicians, under the direction of acclaimed international conductor Dr. Iván del Prado, Sunday, May 5, 2:30 p.m., at the SaengerTheatre. This regional youth orchestra draws students from three states and 18 schools. The concert includes works by Modest Mussorgsky, Carl Maria von Weber, Alexander Borodin and Mexican composer Arturo Marquez and features a performance by the MSYO Concerto Competition winner Addison Vontroba on clarinet.

The Concerto Competition is an opportunity for outstanding high school musicians to earn the privilege of performing as a featured soloist with a full orchestra. Winners are selected by a panel of professional musicians not affiliated with the MSYO.

Addison Vontroba is a junior at Fairhope High School, where she excels musically and academically. In addition to being principal clarinet in the MSYO, she is principal clarinet in the school’s wind ensemble. She has been selected for every all-state honor band and top state band since entering high school. She is active in the Honor Society and plans to continue with clarinet and conducting in college. She will performwith the orchestra the Concertino for Clarinet No. 1 by Carl Maria von Weber.

Each year’s season finale is an exciting concert showing the amazing accomplishments of all the young musicians in the orchestra. “Since the MSYO is comprised of the best student musicians in the region, our concerto competition is particularly rigorous,” Mobile Symphony President and CEO Celia Mann Baehr explains.  “We are pleased to offer this unique learning opportunity. We are proud of them all!”

Admission is $10 for students, $20 for adults when purchased in advance or $25 at the door. Tickets and more about the MSYO can be found at www.mobilesymphony.org or call the Mobile Symphony at 251-432-2010.
