The theme for this month’s tour is THE ART OF JOHN AUGUSTUS WALKER. Visitors will see his his famous landscapes, historical panoramas, Mardi Gras art, and more, and learn about the fascinating life of this Mobile artist.

John Augustus Walker (1901-1967) is best known for the murals he painted for the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. He also painted portraits and landscapes and designed Mardi Gras floats and costumes. During his career, Walker received numerous local, state, and national awards for his work and was one of the most active artists of his time in the greater Mobile area. His murals are on permanent display in the lobby of the Southern Market/Old City Hall National Historic Landmark, home to the History Museum of Mobile, and feature such subjects as Mardi Gras, transportation, education, and slavery.

During this informative and fascinating tour, curators will discuss the particular environmental, handling, and housing factors needed to prevent damage and ensure the preservation of the objects they collect, safeguard, and interpret for present and future generations of citizens.
