Mobile’s rich Mardi Gras heritage comes alive in a fresh, contemporary way with Once More, with Revelry: A Revival of Mobile’s Official Mardi Gras Posters, opening Friday, February 7, 2026, from 3:00–6:00 PM at the Historic Avenue Cultural
Center.
Local artist ShaMyra Sylvester revives the city’s official Mardi Gras poster tradition through bold, modern design rooted in Mobile’s history and cultural spirit. The exhibition features a series of limited-edition posters that reflect the pageantry of the season while honoring the institutions and communities that have preserved Mardi Gras traditions for generations.
The public opening, Once More, with Revelry: A Revival of Mobile’s Official Mardi Gras Posters, includes an artist talk, exhibition walkthrough, and reception, with prints available for purchase. Guests will have the opportunity to engage with the history of the posters, meet the artist, and experience the visual storytelling that has long been part of Mobile’s Mardi Gras culture.
The Historic Avenue Cultural Center, originally the Davis Avenue Branch of the Mobile Public Library, served the community during segregation and later became the National African American Archives and Museum. Today, it continues to preserve and elevate Mobile’s cultural history through exhibitions and community programming.
“I’m excited to bring this series to life at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center,” says Sylvester. “This exhibition celebrates both the vibrancy of Mobile’s Mardi Gras and the rich history that continues to shape our city.”
