Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art opened on 11/11/11 in Bentonville, Arkansas, with the art world curious about its founder, philanthropist Alice Walton, and its location in an area of the country where a fine art museum had not previously existed. Seven years later, nearly 4 million people have visited the museum, which has drawn acclaim for its mission of Welcoming All to experience the power of art and nature on its 120-acre setting. Hear from Executive Director and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Rod Bigelow on what it’s like to launch, guide, and create a future vision for a new museum.
Rod Bigelow has served as executive director of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art since 2013, guiding all facets of the museum’s development and reflecting his more than 20 years of experience in management of arts and cultural institutions. He joined Crystal Bridges in 2010, serving as the deputy director of operations and administration, focusing on organizational and policy development as well as construction activities leading up to the museum’s opening in November, 2011. In that role, he led the Crystal Bridges’ strategic planning process, resulting in a comprehensive plan guiding the museum’s focus.
