NEW WORK BY ELSA MARÍA MELÉNDEZ
Mounting her first solo exhibition in the United States, Elsa María Meléndez (Born 1974, Caguas, Puerto Rico) is a printmaker and creator of installations where she incorporates embroidery, stitch, and large amounts of synthetic materials. The iconography in her work shows features of the Puerto Rican idiosyncrasy and summarizes debates that respond to uncertainty faced with cultural destruction, exhaustion of human relations, the decline in public policy, and lack of gender equality. The artist employs representations of women in private and public life to develop an antithesis on judgments of the body and sexuality.
“My production is about intimate and marginal issues that can be interpreted from diverse circumstances and problems. The work summarizes debates between the perverse, the ethical, the emotional and decency. These struggles respond to uncertainty in decadence, and deterioration of human relationships, as well as in the decline of public policies and lack of equity between genders in a complex value system.
