In the last few years ‘the Housing Crisis’ has become a common term. Lobbed around as a persistent context for all sorts of problems; we all recognize the phrase but it can be hard to understand what exactly is the ‘housing crisis’– Are we in it? Is it just for working people or specific areas? If this is a crisis, what does stability look like?
In Alabama Contemporary’s current pop-up exhibition Homestead Extinction at AC Satellite in downtown, artist Tony Rodrigues creates a glittery and colorful work that meditates on a post-unsolved crisis view of the American Dream.
ACAC has assembled a panel of experts to delve into the genesis of this work on April 16, help to understand what’s at stake, and also imagine solutions. The panel discussion featuring David Perkes, Ellis G. Foster, Lisa McCarroll, Beverly Reed, will cover the ‘Whys’ of Home Ownership, Wealth Building & Community Resilience, What shapes the cost of housing (defining ‘affordable’), and Innovation in Development and Architecture. They will start at 6 p.m. at 561 Saint Francis Street, with refreshments and entry by donation.
