Gulf Coast Exploreum: Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!

The insatiable curiosity of Curious George – the little monkey who has captured the imagination and hearts of millions of children and adults for 65 years – comes to life on September 23, 2017, at Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. The new exhibit, Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!, will introduce young children to Curious George’s world and lead visitors on a fun, meaningful interactive math, science and engineering-based adventure. Based on the familiar characters in H.A. and Margret Rey’s classic stories published by Houghton Mifflin, the Curious George exhibit inspires young children’s natural curiosity as they explore early science, math and engineering through hands-on interactive play. The immersive exhibit environment takes place in the neighborhood where Curious George lives with his friend, The Man with the Yellow Hat.

University of Mobile: Artwork by Conroy Hudlow

The Alabama School of the Arts at University of Mobile is hosting the work of artist Conroy Hudlow. This exhibit will be on display Oct. 2-31 in the Donald Gallery on campus.

An Art Talk will be held with Hudlow on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. with a reception following.

Both the exhibit and Art Talk are free and open to the public.

The Donald Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in Martin Hall on campus at University of Mobile, 5735 College Pkwy.

Hudlow is a painter who specializes in abstract painting. After his retirement from a career in architecture, he returned to his passion for fine art. Picking up where he had left off 30 years prior, Hudlow went back to drawing from figures, but with better composition and concept than he had as a college student.

“I believe that the artist allows the viewer to see through their eyes,” said Hudlow. “Not by painting what he sees, but by transposing space, objects, line and colors into a unique experience.”

For information about the show or visual art programs at University of Mobile, contact Phillip Counselman, associate professor of art, at pcounselman@umobile.edu or 251.442.2283.

MMofA: A Painter’s Hand: The Monotypes of Adolph Gottlieb

This exhibition offers a look at a largely unexamined aspect of the career of one of the most highly influential thinkers and artists of the 20th century. This exhibition features Adolph Gottlieb’s little-known monotypes that he worked on between the summer of 1973 and February 1974. An intimate suite of works created within the last 9 months of the artist’s life, these monotypes are a summation of Gottlieb’s 50-year career as a painter.
