“Cooper,” An Exhibit by sculptor Jamie Adams

The Alabama School of the Arts at University of Mobile is hosting the work of artist Jamie Adams in an exhibit called “Cooper.” This exhibit will be on display Aug. 21-Sept. 29 in the Marilyn Foley Art Gallery. An Art Talk will be held with Adams on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. with a reception following. Both the exhibit and Art Talk are free and open to the public. The Donald Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in Martin Hall on campus at University of Mobile, 5735 College Pkwy. Adams is a sculptor and potter whose artistic process derives from a childhood spent in a profoundly religious family in the Deep South. His art is characterized by vibrant colors, allusions to art history and pop culture, and an insistent use of new technologies in his work. “This body of work is inspired by the untimely passing of my brother in 2001.” explained Adams. “We first met when I was 12, and this work is both an exploration of my rumination on our unshared childhood, as well as imaginings of the man he might have been.” For information about the show or visual art programs at University of Mobile, contact Phillip Counselman, associate professor of art, at or 251.442.2283. Marnée’s Studio: Figure Drawing Studio Sessions

Join us on Thursdays, Sep.7-Sep.28 from 6:30-8:30pm @ Marnée's Studio for loosely guided figure drawing sessions that will work with 2 live, nude models (male and female). Basic supplies included (drawing paper, charcoal, erasers, pastels, brushes, etc).  Price:  $100/4sessions, $30/1 session. Open to adult students of all levels.  BYOB and food.

The human figure is the ideal subject for creating powerful drawings that can be personally and/or broadly meaningful. Whether your goal is to convey accurate forms and proportions or if you're attempting to communicate something beyond form, working from live models:

-provides an accurate essence of poses (such as weight shift and gesture) that is hard to attain from photographs
-improves artistic skills such as gauging proportions
-allows for a more authentic experience

Students can expect to learn a variety of drawing methods and topics including:

-accurately assessing figure proportions
-line, mass, gesture
-short pose studies and long-pose drawings
-depicting dimension with diverse mediums

Don't miss this opportunity to work from live models and network with artists in the area!

* Doors will be locked by 7pm to prevent interruptions.  Latecomers can call (251)206-5587 to gain entry.*

Location: Marnée's Studio
