Founder’s Day at Bellingrath Gardens and Home

Bellingrath Gardens and Home will continue a longstanding tradition when it celebrates the legacy of its founder, Walter Bellingrath, on Sunday, August 6, his birthday.  On Founder’s Day, admission to the Gardens is complimentary to all Mobile and Baldwin County residents, but there is an additional charge to tour the Bellingrath Museum Home. Born in Atlanta on August 6, 1869, Bellingrath was Mobile’s first Coca-Cola bottler. He and his wife, Bessie, created Bellingrath Gardens from a former fishing camp along the Fowl River, which Bellingrath purchased in 1917. The Bellingraths opened the Gardens to the public for the first time on April 7, 1932. The Founder’s Day tradition dates back to 1949, when Mr. Bellingrath invited local residents to come and enjoy the Gardens at no charge as part of his 80th birthday celebration.

USA: “Beauty in USA’s Back Yard” Art Exhibit

“Beauty in USA’s Back Yard” refers to the beauty Ron and Dawn have discovered at USA’s very own Glenn Sabastian Nature Trail. It is their hope that by this exhibit, they can make more people aware of the beauty of the nature trail. All but two of the photographs in this exhibit were taken at the nature trail (the other two were taken on USA Campus). The nature trail has been a part of the USA campus for nearly 30 years. Efforts to officially recognize the trail began with geography major Amy Milam in 2006. Amy mapped the trails and held numerous fundraisers that helped to pay for trail improvements. She also received approval to name the trail for Dr. Glenn Sebastian. In the fall of 2011, Brian Allred, assistant director of Campus Recreation, spearheaded efforts to bring the nature trail project to fruition. With substantial financial support from the Student Government Association, the Glenn Sebastian Nature Trail is now a reality.

Ron and Dawn have been interested in photography their whole lives and are both well-traveled, having taken pictures the world over. Interested in many facets of photography, they have a special love for the beauty of God’s nature, which is exemplified by the Glenn Sabastian Nature Trail.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.
