Vicki Covington at Page & Palette

In Once in a Blue Moon, Vicki Covington's new novel set during Barack Obama s first presidential campaign, change is in the air. Readers follow a diverse community of renters in Southside Birmingham through one transformative year. In league with other great Southern novelists including Anne Tyler and Fannie Flagg, Covington writes with tenderness and humor while asking important questions about family, faith, race, class, and ultimately hope.

MPL- Jackie Trimble: Poetry Readings

Come meet Jacqueline Allen Trimble as she shares readings from her new book, American Happiness, an eclectic collection of verse. Ms. Trimble’s new work addresses everything from the death of parents, to racial tension, to the encroachment of coyotes into urban spaces. On her poetic journey, in which takes us from the personal to the political, Trimble probes our racial divide. She is compassionate and fierce, cutting at our hypocrisy with the knife of her words and willing us toward our better common humanity.  A book signing will be held in the Armbrecht/Briskman Meeting Room.

USA Symphony Band Spring Concert

Dr. Jason Rinehart and the USA Symphony Band present their final concert of the year with an homage to the season of Spring.  Music on the concert will feature Alabama composer Tyler S. Grant's "Panoramic Landscapes," Travis Cross' "...and the Grass Sings in the Meadows," Mark Camphouse's "Yosemite Autumn," and Malcolm Arnold's "Four Scottish Dances."

THE MOBILE DELTA: Glass & Light

Rene Culler’s site-specific work is a mural in glass that celebrates the species-rich Delta and its atmospheric qualities. The Delta is a changeling environment which is constantly shaped and molded by the weather and waterways. As the grasses, almost transparent, catch the light, Culler’s drawings and painting in glass suggest the landscape that southern Alabama holds so dear. The composition is a wall of natural light utilized as a glass canvas for drawing, painting and printing with vitreous enamels. Slumped dimensional panels and blown glass abstractly portray the location’s dimensionality.
