MPL: Vicki Covington Book Signing

Come meet author Vicki Covington as she introduces her new book, Once in a Blue Moon. The novel is set in Birmingham, Alabama, during the 2008 Presidential election campaign, where tenants of a benevolent landlord in a neighborhood that has seen better days, form their own brand of community. Follow them as they join together to lift each other up and bring hope for a better future back into their lives. There will be a book signing following the presentation. For more information, please call 251-208-7097. Vicki Covington received a B.A. in sociology followed by a Masters in Social Work at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. She worked as an outpatient therapist for twelve years in Birmingham. Her husband, writer Dennis Covington, helped her discover that there was a writer inside her waiting to come out. Her stories were published in Boston Globe Magazine, The New Yorker, and the Southern Humanities Review among others. She was the author of several novels, including Bird of Paradise, Night Ride Home, The Last Hotel for Women and Gathering Home. She was also the “Meditations for Bad Girls” columnist at The Oxford American for a number of years. There will be a book signing following the presentation. Once in a Blue Moon is her love letter to the community she used to call home in Birmingham.

THE MOBILE DELTA: Glass & Light

Rene Culler’s site-specific work is a mural in glass that celebrates the species-rich Delta and its atmospheric qualities. The Delta is a changeling environment which is constantly shaped and molded by the weather and waterways. As the grasses, almost transparent, catch the light, Culler’s drawings and painting in glass suggest the landscape that southern Alabama holds so dear. The composition is a wall of natural light utilized as a glass canvas for drawing, painting and printing with vitreous enamels. Slumped dimensional panels and blown glass abstractly portray the location’s dimensionality.
