The USA Marx Library is pleased to announce the opening of a new dual art exhibit, "In Stillness" by Kathrena Rivera and "The Serpents of Bienville" by Sean and Amanda Herman. The exhibit is currently on display through April 30, 2017, in the first floor gallery of the library.

The Dance Academy of Mobile: Ballet I

(Studio B- Ages 4-6) Ballet technique is the basis for modern, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Ballet is vital to the performance quality of all dance forms. Class will focus on ballet steps, technique,terminology, musicality, and combinations. Class will build awareness ofproper alignment, muscle control and injury prevention.  Students will also learn problem solving skills, listening skills, how to follow directions, work with other students and begin to build self esteem and self discipline. Ballet also conditions the body and builds stamina, strength and flexibility. Each level will have specific guidelines as to what terminolgy will be learned, with the higher levels becoming more complex and challenging.

The Dance Academy of Mobile: Broadway Jazz I-II

(Studio A) This class is for 6-8 year olds. Broadway Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique while exploring various styles used in Broadway shows. Class Curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with Broadway style jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations.  Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance skills such as connecting with the audience, telling a story through dance and facial expressions.

The Dance Academy of Mobile: Tap I

Studio B- Ages 4-6. Students will learn the terminology and techniques through specific exercises ard routines in tap classes. Tap is a wonderful dance tool to help students gain confidence, build strength, coordination skills, muscle control, knowledge and flexibility.  Students will learn rhythmic patterns, how to count music, create their own rhythms with, without and against a variety of music styles, such as jazz, blues, pop and country.

The Dance Academy of Mobile: Baby Ballet

Studio B- Ages 2-4. Classes will consist of familiarizing students with simple ballet steps, ballet technique, ballet terminology, musicality, and creative movement. Students will learn simple movement concepts, such as self and general space, high, middle and low levels, shapes, direction and speed.  Students will also learn problem solving skills, listening skills, how to follow directions, work with other students and begin to build self esteem and self discipline. This class will be helpful in the seperation process from the parent and will give the student a creative outlet. Students will learn to explore their ideas of dance and how to create movement. Each class will be 45 minutes.

The Dance Academy of Mobile: Gymnastics I-II

(Studio A) Ages 5-10. Level I is a beginner level for school age kids.  These classes will open with a fun warm-up stretch, which will teach them the importance of flexibility. They will learn basic gymnastics skills. Progression and lead-ups are the key factors at this level.  Some of the basic skills they will learn include: cartwheels, handstands, bridges, pull-overs, cast, balancing skills, running, jumping, leaping, agility movements and of course FUN! Level II classes are still based on the same format and structure as Level I. Level II are considered more of a beginner/ intermediate level where gymnastics skills will increase in difficulty, with continued emphasis on safety.  In addition to perfecting level I skills, they will also be working on round-offs, bridge kick-overs, and slightly more advanced jumping, leaping, agility movements and of course FUN! ​

MOJO Jazz Jambalaya

MOJO hosts a Jazz Jambalaya (JJ) every fourth Monday except during the Mobile Mardi Gras season.  A MOJO JJ is evening of live jazz, great food, historic environs and fabulous people - with a bit of jazz history and information.  We call it "gastro-edu-info-tainment".

Local, regional, national and international musicians perform 2 hours of the best jazz on the Gulf Coast.  Admission includes a delicious bowl of jambalaya, salad, assorted cheeses, fruits and desserts.  

Full bar service, lighted parking, door-to-door security, an opportunity to win great door prizes and meet celebrity guest narrators all make MOJO Jazz Jambalayas irresistible.   Y'all come JAZZ IT UP with MOJO!

THE MOBILE DELTA: Glass & Light

Rene Culler’s site-specific work is a mural in glass that celebrates the species-rich Delta and its atmospheric qualities. The Delta is a changeling environment which is constantly shaped and molded by the weather and waterways. As the grasses, almost transparent, catch the light, Culler’s drawings and painting in glass suggest the landscape that southern Alabama holds so dear. The composition is a wall of natural light utilized as a glass canvas for drawing, painting and printing with vitreous enamels. Slumped dimensional panels and blown glass abstractly portray the location’s dimensionality.
