Artist Statement:

When it comes to music: the music comes first. Anything and everything else falls by the wayside. When it comes to composing for movies or the stage: the story comes first. As a composer, the best way that I know how to express a story and emotions is through music. The only way that I can fully convey a story is by creating the best music as possible, thus giving everything I have to a score. This does not mean making the largest scale work as possible but taking time to learn what the story needs and breathing life into it, thus allowing it to grow and take on a life of its own. I have always had music playing in my head, I love imagination, and I love to create things. What better venue for me to express that what I love than through film, the place where dreams come to life! My life's goal is to grow as a musician and as a human. I hope that I never stop learning new things. I am currently a junior at the University of South Alabama studying performance piano. It was only recently that I began my adventures into the world of music. I have always been interested in music, my earliest and fondest musical memories are seeing the Phantom of the Opera and the Nutcracker ballet in Pittsburgh as a young child, but having grown up in the middle of Northwestern Ohio, it was a musical void. My musical exposure consisted of movies. In lieu of music, I played baseball and participated in USA swimming and fencing. A little over four years ago, I began my trip down the musical rabbit hole. I started taking piano and theory lessons, and pursued anything regarding the subject with gusto. Ever since that performance of the ballet so many years ago, I have always wanted to compose and conduct: I was finally getting the tools to realize my dream and compose the music I have always heard in my head. Within a year of beginning music lessons, I prepared my repertoire for my Julliard auditions; however, the multitude of injuries I sustained to my hands over my athletic career prevented me from fulfilling that goal. However, I was not discouraged. The faculty at South Alabama and the individuals I have had the privilege to learn from, at the Mobile Symphony and Opera, have been invaluable. My freshman year of college, I won the State of Alabama MTNA Composition Competition, and I was privileged to be a colleague and one of the final students to study with Maestro Harold Farberman at the Bard Conservatory Summer Conductors Institute between my sophomore and junior years. My life’s goal is to learn to create musical magic in both the cinema and concert hall. When it comes to music: the music comes first. Anything and everything else falls by the wayside. When it comes to composing for movies or the stage: the story comes first. As a composer, the best way that I know how to express a story and emotions is through music.
